Hiking in Sedona: West Fork Trail

Hiking West Fork Trail is one of the most amazing and iconic hiking trails in the Arizona and ranked one of the top 10 in the US. A gorgeous tree canopy provides shade, the cool water of Oak Creek revives hikers during the hot Arizona summers, and the dramatic walls of the canyon backdrop the entire hike.

How to get there

Here’s a map to get driving directions. Keep an eye out for the park’s entrance which sits along the 89A between milepost 380 and 390. The drive is a bit more than 2 hours from Phoenix.

Cost

Entrance costs $10 per vehicle of 5 people.

One word of caution: During warmer summer months prepare to arrive early to beat the crowds. The trail is so popular during this time that the parking lot quickly fills up. If you happen to find yourself in this predicament, you can park along the 89A and walk in. Walk-ins cost $2 per person.

Hours

9a - 7p

Ease of hike

This trail is super easy and great for families. Allow yourself for about 2-3 hours for the 7 mile hike.

A little history

The Meyhew Lodge ruins mark the beginning of the trail.  The history here is so fascinating!  While first the area was established for homesteaders (after running out a lively Grizzly Bear population!), the lodge was opened in 1926 for guests. Some notable travelers include Clark Gable, President Hoover, Jimmy Stewart, and Walt Disney. The lodge eventually closed and came under the ownership of the Forest Service in 1968. In 1980 it burned down and all we’re left with today are the ruins.

You’ll end up crossing Oak Creek 13 times which is a great relief from the heat. The water is about ankle-deep most of the way.  Our 17-month-old walked in the water and had the best time.  I’m sure dogs would really enjoy this hike, too (they’re allowed as long as they’re leashed).

For one of the best hikes during the warmer months in Arizona, you just can’t beat West Fork Trail. Family friendly, easy hike, and oh so refreshing with plenty of shade and the Oak Creek to accompany you.
